Grand Summary of Stress in the Workplace

        I chose the topic "stress in the workplace" because not only did it interest me, but I've heard many times from many other people how much work is stressing them out so learning more and reading deeper into the affects of workplace stress sparked interest to me. After reading and watching all five resources, there are some similarities and differences between all of them. Firstly, the similarities I have noticed is the discussion of productivity. In all of the resources, the authors all mentioned how stress can interfere with your productivity at work. Another similarity that I noticed is finding the right resources to help with dealing with the stress you attain from work. From all the resources, they all mentioned how getting counselling could help deal with stress.   Summary : This corporate wellness magazine titled “Workplace Stress: A Silent Killer of Employee Health and Productivity” defined that stress feelings that are related to your job can be harmful both physically and emotionally. This could result if the job does not match the workers capabilities, resources or needs. Many employees have reported that the stress they get from work compromises with their performance at work and their overall health as well. In this magazine, a survey revealed that 40 percent of workers have reported that their job is stressful and, in another survey conducted by Yale University, revealed that 29 percent of workers have extreme stress due to their jobs. This magazine explained that those who are younger, women and in lower skilled jobs have a higher risk of feeling stressed than others and that those who are casual full-time workers are most at risk of a job strain.   Summary: This news article examines how stress from work could interfere with your relationship at home. Jessica O’Reilly, who is a doctor and hosts the podcast Sex With Dr. Jess, explained that certain occupations such as military supervisors, dancers, flight attendants and choreographers are associated with higher divorce rates. O’Reilly explained that the importance of minimizing workplace stress has increased. Certain aspects of work can lead to the increase in stress and anxiety as well as the impact on the family life is having to answer emails, calls and requests after work hours.   Summary   Rob Cooke conducted a TedTalk that’s titled ‘The Cost of Workplace Stress-and How to Reduce it”. In this TedTalk, Cooke explained that the stress we incur from work can be related to productivity and wellness and the stress can cost the economy trillions of dollars and looks at it as stress is a consequence. Cooke then explained that the stress the gain from our workplace can impact the economy by reducing the productivity in our place of work and increasing our health care costs due to the illnesses we can get from ongoing stress. Stress levels can be from the amount of time we spend at work, which is a majority of our life and that it is very difficult to have a work-life balance.  Summary:     “Stress at Work: Self-monitoring of Stressors and Resources to Support Employees” is a research paper conducted and discusses why it is important for employees to self-monitor any stressors from work and the types of resources to support employees with their mental health and functionality. The authors of this research paper developed an online self-monitoring tool that is known as the Brief Assessment of Stress and Energy, also known as BASE. The Brief Assessment of Stress and Energy is used to regularly evaluate your stressors and resources. They explained that BASE has four characteristics that will help distinguish BASE from other instruments.
