Stress in the Workplace Blog 5
Summary:
This corporate wellness magazine titled
“Workplace Stress: A Silent Killer of Employee Health and Productivity” defined
that stress feelings that are related to your job can be harmful both
physically and emotionally. This could result if the job does not match the
workers capabilities, resources or needs. Many employees have reported that the
stress they get from work compromises with their performance at work and their overall
health as well. In this magazine, a survey revealed that 40 percent of workers
have reported that their job is stressful and, in another survey conducted by Yale
University, revealed that 29 percent of workers have extreme stress due to
their jobs.
This magazine explained that those
who are younger, women and in lower skilled jobs have a higher risk of feeling
stressed than others and that those who are casual full-time workers are most
at risk of a job strain.
The effects of stress could affect yourself
physically and mentally. These issues could result in serious health issues
such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, anxiety, depression, and substance
abuse. With that happening, it could result in the increase of health care
costs and administrative costs for the employers.
We were given ways to prevent and strategize stress from work which contains three different levels. The three levels that were listed are primary, secondary, and tertiary. Firstly, primary intervention’s goal is to reduce or remove any type of stressors that are in your work environment. Some examples given were noise and poor lighting. Secondary interventions have a goal to improve the way workers could cope with their stress levels as well as catch stress induced symptoms early. Ways to cope with stress is to attend stress management training, counselling, and wellness programs. Lastly, tertiary interventions aim to provide treatment, compensation, rehabilitation, and other programs for employees who are already stressed.

This magazine made me realize how
important it is to take control of your stress levels because it can end badly
if you allow it to take control of your life. Reading how badly it can become
if stress overtakes your life is scary as it can lead to depression, anxiety, heart
diseases and much more. This makes me think and put into perspective the importance
of knowing how to manage your stress levels and knowing how to properly manage
these feelings in a positive way.
